Finding Inspiration in Your Dreams for Children

Today's focus on standards, checklists, and rating scales can leave an early learning educator wondering, "How many more years can I keep doing this?" The day-to-day challenges often cause us to lose sight of our passion and fire. Staying the course requires us to remember the heart of why we do what we do. In this opening session, Connie Dougherty will faciliate conversation and share stories to reframe our thinking about current demands and reconnect us to the meaning in the work we do with children. About Connie Dougherty
Connie Dougherty is a former family home childcare provider, preschool teacher, and private elementary school principal. She currently designs and teaches classes for the Child Care Action Council, and is a popular speaker at conferences throughout Washington.

Session 1 - 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
1A:FULL Infant/Toddler Series: Exploring Toddler Curriculum - Instructor: Connie Dougherty
This class is for caregivers of children ages 9 months to 2-1/2. Is your toddler curriculum based on what parents ask for, on what you think toddlers need to know for kindergarten, or on what the teacher before you had planned? When curriculum is based on research, individual development, and culture, toddlers are more successful and teachers are happier. Come consider whether your curriculum is on the right track or could use a little fine-tuning! Area II; Level 3; FCC and center

1B: Preschool Series: Using Language and Materials to Support Children's Reasoning Skills - Instructor: Debbie Roberts, M.A.
This class is best for caregivers of children 2-1/2 and up. What kinds of materials and strategies should teachers use to really get preschool children thinking? Intentionally providing children with the right types of materials and supports is key to getting children to become problem-solvers and to think more deeply about new concepts and connections. Discover strategies and get ideas for classroom materials that support children’s brainstorming, curiosity, and problem-solving skills. This is an advanced class that supports Early Achievers success with the preschool ECERS tool. Area II; Level 3; FCC and center

1C: Leadership Series: The Many Hats of Early Childhood Educators - Instructor: Tracy Collins, M.Ed.
How do we define professionalism in early childhood environments?  While considering how a profession is defined, participants will look closely at the profession of early childhood, and how it does and doesn’t fit with other definitions of what makes a professional.  We will also examine program climate, work attitudes, vision and the multiple roles within an EC setting.  Our discussion will include developmentally appropriate practice, ethics, and the relationship between professionalism and leadership. Area VIII; Level 1-4; FCC and center

1D: FULL Staying Mindful in Stressful Moments - Instructor: Susan Burnham, M.i.T.
What can you do when you’ve reached the end of your rope? How can you care for yourself while meeting the needs of the children? In this class you’ll reflect on what “pushes your buttons” and develop strategies to regroup when those buttons get pushed.  This class will include discussion, reflection, activities, and strategies that will help you better connect with children. Come increase your ability to be present and responsive so you can best support the growth of children in your care. Area VIII; Level 3; FCC and center

1E: Trauma-Informed Early Learning - Instructor: Heidi DeVries, M.Ed.
It's the little boy who bangs his head on the wall. It's the 4-year-old girl who throws the chair in anger. It's the 2-year-old who hits, bites, pushes, and falls down in a rapid melt-down. These could be the faces of traumatized children. Come explore the impact of trauma on children and gain insight into why some children behave the way they do. Even if you don't know the source of the trauma, you can use what you observe to support harmed children in a "trauma-informed" manner. Leave with tools and strategies to use with the young children in your care. Area I,VI; Level 4; FCC and center

2A: FULL Infant/Toddler Series: Enjoying Loose Parts - Instructor: Rose Tiller
This class is for caregivers of children ages 1 to 2-1/2. Open-ended materials capture children’s curiosity and stimulate their imaginations. Not only that, when young children explore loose parts, they develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, and can practice being “scientists.” Come delve into fresh ideas for inexpensive, safe loose parts and consider how to incorporate them into your curriculum. Leave with ideas you’ll be anxious to try! Area II; Level 3; FCC and center

2B: FULL Preschool Series: 3-D Art for Young Children - Instructor: Susan Burnham, M.i.T.
This class is best for caregivers of children ages 2-1/2  and up. Looking for inspiration and new ways to introduce 3-dimensional art in your preschool classroom? Come explore a variety of art materials and tools to use during small group and whole class projects, and for projects that extend over several days. Investigate how children's experiences during each activity develop skills they can use during future projects. Join us and discover how art-making can become an integral part of your environment and enhance child and family pride in your displays. Area II; Level 3; FCC and center

2C: Leadership Series: Advocacy and You - Instructor: Ryan Prico and Cameron Joy-Kurtz
Everyone can be a leader by supporting the early childhood field through advocacy. Come learn more about how the legislative process works, how federal and state policies impact child care providers and families, and how your own personal stories and experiences can impact legislation. Child Care Aware of WA will share tools and resources that you can use to make your advocacy efforts more effective. Attendees will also have an opportunity to connect with other providers and advocates. Area VIII; Level 3; FCC and center

2D: Brain Science and Dual Language Learning - Myths and Truths - Instructor: Sabine Thomas, N.D., I-LABS
This presentation will provide background on early language acquisition, the benefits of learning more than one language, and best practices that support language development for all children. Bilingual or monolingual early learning providers, teachers, coaches and mentors will receive general tools to best support dual language learners and their parents. There will be some emphasis on generating culturally responsive and mindful ways to work through difficult conversations between providers, parents and children. Area I; Level 3; FCC and center

2E: The Science of Hope - Instructor: Linda Segur, B.A., C.O.D.
Hope is an important protective factor that enables children and families to flourish.  Hope is also an important coping resource to vicarious trauma and burnout among service providers and teachers.  This workshop will present the science of Hope as a psychological strength in our ability to cope with traumatic experiences and work toward future goals.  In particular this seminar with show how (1) hope predicts adaptive outcomes, (2) hope buffers the effects of adversity, and (3) hope can be influenced and sustained. Area II; Level 4; FCC and center

Session 3 - 2:15 to 3:45 p.m.

3A: FULL Infant/Toddler Series: Come Move and Groove With Me - Instructor: Heidi DeVries, M.Ed.
This class is for caregivers of children ages 1 to 2-1/2. Children need to move! Music and movement provide multiple learning opportunities as well as support in behavior management and self-regulation skill-building. Come explore how music and movement for infants and toddlers can create a groovy, rich learning environment and increase cultural awareness. Walk away with activity ideas, Early Achievers considerations, and a make-and-take musical instrument. Area II; Level 2; FCC and center

3B: FULL Preschool Series: Harvest for Healthy Kids - A Farm to Preschool Curriculum - Instructor: Rose Tiller
Let's teach children how to love fruits and vegetables! This class will show you a great way to get kids to try new fruits and vegetables that are local to your area.  Using the Harvest for Healthy curriculum (free) online access, you will be able to immediately begin this fun program. Class includes hands-on practice and opportunities to explore some of the activity kits. Come join in the fun of teaching children about fruits and vegetables! Area II; Level 3; FCC and center

3C: Leadership Series: Exploring Participative Management - Instructor: Mical Gaynor
Center directors and assistants, come reflect on your own decision-making style and begin to explore how you might increase your staff's meaningful involvement in program decisions. Learn why and how participative management can build trust and collaboration at your center. Time will be provided for you to share experiences and ideas with other administrators. Mical Gaynor is the director of New Life Child Development Center in Yelm. Area VII; Level 4; centers

3D: Engaging in STEAM Conversations - Instructor: Tracy Collins, M.Ed.
STEAM is an integrated approach to teaching, including physical & social sciences (S), technology (T), engineering (E), arts (A), and mathematics (M).  In this session, we will look at the components of STEAM, ways to bring STEAM into your facility, and how STEAM crosses all areas and all levels of education.  STEAM learners develop skills through discussion, visualization, graphing, and multiple ways of communication. 3E: FULL Teach Me What to Do Instead - Instructor: Connie Dougherty
This class is for teachers who are looking for ways to prevent challenging behavior in 3-5 year-olds. Effectively handling challenging behavior is important, but proactively preventing it is even more important!  Learn techniques for teaching children to identify their feelings, calm down, handle disappointment, and remember rules. Leave with tools to use right away with preschoolers. Area VI; Level 2; FCC and center
