How do I become licensed?
The Child Care Action Council can help you work through the steps of becoming licensed. We offer the required classes, every month. We can help you with licensing information, USDA Food Programs, the Family Child Care Association for your area, and the local Director's Share. We can let you know the prices and numbers of providers in the area where you will being doing care and let you know when the next licensing orientation is for your area. What is STARS?
The State Training and Registry System (STARS) is a career development system designed to improve child care through basic and ongoing training for child care providers and offers initial and ongoing child care training linked to the state's minimum licensing requirements. Child Care Action Council is pleased to provide a wide variey of STARS classes, from the initial 20-hour basic training for new providers to advanced classes for the experinced provider to fulfill the 10-hours of required ongoing training.
What types of classes are available from CCAC?

Under the guidance of an advisory committee, the Child Care Action Council provides a wide range of training opportunities to support caregivers and build the quality of care in the community. These opportunities include:

 

  • S.T.A.R.S. Certified Training
  • CPR/First Aid and HIV/AIDs trainings are offered monthly
  • Workshops that respond to caregivers needs and requests
  • Affordable, conveniently scheduled classes
  • CDA clock hours for workshops
  • Enhancement of skills that lead to career development

Late Arrival Policy

Arrive early to minimize disruptions, to respect the trainer’s plan for the class and to make sure STARS certificates are issued fairly. Those arriving 15 minutes late will not receive certificates or refunds. In most cases, the door will be locked at this time.

 

No Child Care Available

Our classes are designed for adults, so please, for the comfort of everyone, do not bring children.

 

Bad Weather/Disaster

Listen to KGY 1240AM for notice of class cancellation due to weather or emergency.

 

Refund Policy

Credit is given for a future class if cancelled by 12:00 noon before a weekday evening class or by Friday 12:00 noon before a weekend class. To cancel, you must call 786-8907 x100, leave your name and the class you are registered for. There are no credits or refunds for cancellations after the noon deadline. Credit for a future class or a refund is given if you paid for a full class, is canceled by CCAC, or is changed to a date you cannot attend. You may have someone else attend a class in your place. It is your responsibility to indicate you have a credit when registering for the next class.

 

STARS Reimbursements

$100 reimbursements available for Continuing Education, $150 for 20-Hour Basics from STARS. For more information go to: www.stars.del.wa.gov or call 800-727-3107 x16.

 

SSAEYC Scholarships

Scholarships, of up to $400 per year, are administered by the SSAEYC board. To qualify you must be a SSAEYC member, but you can apply for a partial scholarship for the membership fee. Your completed application must be received one month before the event. For an application, go to www.ssaeyc.org or call (360) 491-1988.

Where is the CCAC Training Academy?

Unless otherwise noted, CCAC classes are hed at our Training Academy. The CCAC Training Academy is at Capital Christian Center at 819 Olympia Ave NE, Olympia 98506. Just north of the intersection at Plum and State Ave, then right on Olympia Ave. Watch for the Training Academy sign.

Child Care Provider Training Academy

STARS and CDA classes are offered throughout the community to support child care providers in their education requirements. These are offered in the 11 STARS areas and 8 CDA areas and cost $8 per hour. They can be from 2 hour workshops to all day trainings. For a current class list & online registration, click here.

 

Child Care Basics Classes

Within 6-months of being licensed or hired, providers must meet the STARS Basic Training Requirement. These 20-hour courses cover current information on guidance, growth, development, health and safety. The cost is $150. For information about STARS reimbursments go to: www.stars.dshs.wa.gov. CCAC offers the following Child Care Basic Classes:
Building Blocks 20 Hour Class for Family Child Care Providers
Designed for family child care providers, this class is offered twice a year on Saturdays, based on enrollment. Click here to request more information.
The 20 Hour Child Care Basics for Center Based Care

CDA Cohort

The Child Development Associate is a nationally recognized credential which allows a candidate to supervise or direct a center, or be a lead teacher. Classes on Tuesday evenings and some Saturdays from September through May fulfill the 120 hour requirement. Group support, advising and a reasonable cost help candidates to prepare for this credential. Click here for more information.

 

Teaching Adults Classes

Yearly 8 hour training offered to become a qualified CCAC and STARS trainer. Ongoing Trainers Updates offer professional networking and growth opportunities to trainers.

 

In-Service Training

CCAC Trainer comes to your center to offer STARS classes designed for your staff. Call to request a topic from our training calendars or to discuss other potential topics. These are designed to meet the needs of your center. The cost of the 1st hour is $85 with subsequent hours based on enrollment.

 

Building Bridges Classes

Offered through a state grant, receive STARS hours and college credit along with a textbook. Mentors assist students in selecting personal goals from the curriculum and using the class material. Provider Consultation

Professional Consultant will come to you with support on such questions as program administration, child guidance, including children with special needs, lesson planning and curriculum (including kits).

 

Supporting Successful Relationships

Consultation in your home or center to promote children’s social/emotional skills. Click here for more information about this program.

 

Child Care Inclusion

Welcoming children with disabilities into child care settings, includes monthly Cohort meetings and STARS trainings as well as consultation on providing care for children with special needs. Click here for more information about this program.

Can a trainer come to my center?

The Child Care Action Council can arrange high-quality in-service training for your staff at your child care home or center. You can choose the topics, and we find an experienced trainer, provide handouts, shop for supplies, and handle all STARS reports. We have offered in-service training on topics related to health and safety, curriculum, guidance and discipline, and working with parents.

The cost of in-service training is determined by number of staff, travel distance and supplies needed for this workshop. Our in-service training is self-supporting, so our minimum charge is $85 for the first hour.
